CBCSF SUPPORT OF THE VICTIMS OF THE HAITI EARTHQUAKE

(February 22, 2010)

From the day after the earthquake that devastated Haiti, CBCSF has been integrally involved in meeting the transfusion needs of earthquake survivors:
  • CBCSF was the first Regional Blood Center in the US to ship blood products to the Naval Station in Jacksonville, Florida destined to treat severely injured Haitians who had been evacuated to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (GTMO) for medical care.

  • CBCSF has continued to send routinely, platelets and red cells, to GTMO through the Naval Station in Jacksonville. Click here to see a PowerPoint slide show, produced by the US military, which traces the pathway of blood from South Florida, through the military system that is responsible for providing all of the blood needs of the Haitian earthquake victims.

  • CBCSF will continue to send ad hoc products, as requested, to the Naval Station in Jacksonville for Haitian relief efforts.

  • CBCSF has also been asked to receive blood from other US blood centers around the United States, and repackage and ship these products to the military, who then forwards the blood to other places where the Haitians are now being treated.

  • Finally, CBCSF will continue to support the blood needs of the Haitians who are now being treated in our local hospitals here in south Florida.

CBCSF is pleased and proud to have played such an important role in this relief effort.
