Programs

Scholarship Assistance Foundation (SAF)

History

SAF started in 1977 as a joint project between the Broward County Council of Senior Citizens, Community Blood Centers of South Florida (CBCSF) and the School Board of Broward County, Florida. It was the first program of its kind in the country, and has become the nation's most successful high school blood donor recruitment program in the history of the nation’s voluntary blood program. Over the years, it has grown to include Miami-Dade Private Schools, Broward County Public and Private Schools, and Palm Beach County Public and Private Schools. It has helped hundreds of deserving students continue their education after high school by awarding over $5 million of scholarships in 32 years, and has provided students with training in organizing and operating public service programs.

How SAF operates

Community Blood Centers of South Florida, Inc. (CBCSF) established SAF, a (501) 3 c corporation, to recognize excellence in blood drive participation and to encourage students to donate blood throughout their lives. Every participating school has the opportunity to earn scholarship monies based on the success of their respective blood drives. CBCSF donates $20 per unit of blood collected at participating schools to SAF. SAF then awards scholarships to graduating students from those participating schools. Every school that conducts blood drives with CBCSF will receive at least one scholarship every school year. Each scholarship will be approximately $500.00. Scholarship dollars will be based on the amount of blood collected at each participating school during the school year.

Scholarship awardees will be notified by certified mail.

Scholarships received from SAF can be used at almost any type of institute for higher learning. Examples include but are not limited to: trade schools, technical schools, culinary schools, design schools, community colleges and any other college or university. Scholarships can be used within the state of Florida or out of state or country. The recipient may use the scholarship anytime within two years of the receipt of the Award Letter. If the scholarship is not used within two years, all unused monies will be returned to the respective high school's account for the following school year.
